MD, Saudi Arabia

Dr. Jawad A. Bajwa is the director for Parkinson’s, Movement Disorders and Neurorestoration program at the National Neuroscience Institute, King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  He obtained his medical degree from King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his neurology residency at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, USA.

He completed a multi-year clinical fellowship in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, deep brain stimulation (DBS) with special emphasis on intraoperative neurophysiological mapping for DBS surgeries and translational research in the field of movement disorders and neuromodulation at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH, USA. Dr, Bajwa also developed and directed the first community based Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders center in St. Paul, MN, USA.

Dr. Bajwa is now developing the first comprehensive interdisciplinary Parkinson’s, movement disorders, neuromodulation clinical and research program in the Middle East. His clinical group is establishing the first large-scale database to explore novel epidemiological and genetic variations in the epigenesis of early onset Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders in Arab ancestry. In addition, his research group is primarily interested in exploring abnormal cortical mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders using magnetoencephalography (MEG). His group is also focused on understanding mechanisms of DBS to develop better neuromodulatory therapies through endogenous neuromodulation, neurofeedback, endovascular neurostimulation and closed loop systems using MEG.

Dr. Bajwa has organized inaugural Middle East-wide educational courses on Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders. Dr. Bajwa has authored chapters and papers. He has been funded by nonprofit organizations and government institutions. Dr. Bajwa serves as a reviewer for neurological journals and as an invited faculty at national and international scientific meetings. He is currently appointed as the chair for the MDS Middle East Task Force.
